Ever since the first electronic equipment required wires to be bundled together to help organize and protect them, cable ties have become more and more invaluable. Wiring applications include preventing or reducing damage to the wires, keeping wires away from moving parts, help tracing and servicing the wiring systems, and organizing an efficient wiring layout. Before that, manufacturers used tape or twine – both of which had inherent problems including unraveling and looseness. The impact that such a simple device has made in such a broad area of applications is truly amazing in retrospect. Cable ties have gone through many innovations over the years and you may be surprised at how many types of cable ties are out there.
Cable Tie Types
Heavy duty nylon Cable ties are designed for use with flexible air ducts and air connectors allowing for quick and secure installlation. Look for cable ties that are UL 181-B-C approved and UL Listed to ensure quality and safety in varying environments. Available in several lengths from 18” to 60”, each tie has a tensile strength of 175 lbs. The diameter of the cable ties is 4.72” for the 18” to 18.15” for the 60” tie. Extra heavy duty cable ties are available in natural and most are available in black.
You probably have a standard cable tie in the junk drawer at your house. Although they are often classified as miniature, standard, intermediate, heavy duty, and extra heavy duty based on bundling force, these ties are basically the same design - a one-piece, self-locking cable tie. They are generally considered single-use and satisfy bundling requirements from 1/16” to 15” and loop tensile strength from 18 to 175 pounds. Colors include Black, Natural, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Gray, Fluorescent Green, Fluorescent Pink, Fluorescent Yellow, Fluorescent Orange, and Fluorescent Blue.
Releasable cable ties are used for prototype work where wires will be added or when a tie is needed for a temporary application that may require rework. They are designed with a lever or button that takes about 50 lbs of force to release. Normally they are only available in white or black nylon.
These ties are design with a mounting hole where they can be hung from a screw or similar wall fastener. They are available in bundle strengths between 50 and 120 lbs. and in black or natural nylon.
Push-mount cable ties snap quickly into a 1/4-in hole to attach a bundle to another surface. The mount portion is easily passed into a pre-drilled hole and locks into place.
This tamper evident tie forms a fixed loop to prevent tote-box damage and also allow space for a cutting tool to remove the tie. For that reason it is also known as a tote-box cable tie.
Identification cable ties bundle and identify with one product. These high quality identification tie wraps include a standard marker area for imprinting or hand writing text to label cable assembly number. Tag and ID with cable ties are durable and long lasting.
These stainless steel cable ties are extra strong and durable steel zip ties that are ideal for bundling cable and wire applications in severe environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures. Stainless steel zip ties are great for industrial projects or any job where a standard type cable tie just simply won’t do. These ties are designed to withstand extended usage in extra high temperature applications. The advanced nylon heat stabilizing material is suitable in a high temperature setting, thus reducing the need for expensive metallic fasteners.
Designed for quick, easy, tool-less installation, the excess tail of these can be removed with a simple “bend, bend again, and twist” motion, but still provide a full 50 lbs. minimum loop tensile strength - perfect for any general-purpose cable tie application.
Many cable tie tools use a ratcheting motion to squeeze the cable tie tighter to the bundle and then cut the excess tail off. Some have adjustable tension settings and can be used with 50 to 120 lb. cable ties. Some automatically cut the tie once the desired tension has been reached.
