 Common Mounting Hardware for Electronics

The electronics industry is usually concerned with the parts that go on a board, like resisters, capacitors, transistors, and the like, but a whole other side of the electronics industry is a big part of engineering the board – electronic hardware. Like anything dealing with electronics, thousands of different types of electronic hardware are out there, so this article will focus on one of the more common categories: mounting hardware – specifically screws, clips, standoffs and spacers.

Spacers and Standoffs
Even what seems to be such a small category has many styles, sizes, and materials. Styles are usually round, square, or hex, male or female and can often be found in materials like nylon, stainless steel, aluminum, and brass/nickel – some are even made of ceramic for high temperature applications. They can be plated or anodized with materials ranging from cadmium to zinc. Standoffs are threaded, which is the basic difference between them and spacers. Usually threading styles are the same as any of the screws you would normally find – from 4-40 to 8-32 and ¼ in. to 1-1/4in. and similar sizes are available in metric. Many manufacturers will modify make custom spacers and standoffs at little to no extra charge. Swage Standoffs and Swage Spacers are an inexpensive method of spacing or mounting electronic circuit boards and electronic components. After installation they are permanently affixed to the board and further assembly becomes simplified. Installation is accomplished by using any means of force. Normal equipment, such as an arbor press, punch press, is most commonly used for installation.

Screws and Panel Hardware
Captive, thumb, shoulder, panel, sems and machine screws hardware are also commonly used with circuit boards. A thumbscrew is a specialized type of screw with either a tall head and ridged or knurled sides, or a flat, vertical head. They are intended to be tightened and loosened by hand. Shoulder and panel screws are simply different versions of thumb screws. They are often cut for Phillips head or slotted screwdrivers as well. Sometimes a wing nut (a nut with two large metal wings so it can be tightened and loosened by hand without a wrench) is called a thumbscrew.

More Hardware
Several hardware accessories are also common in electronics. These include: bushings, cable clamps, cable ties, clips, eyelets, grommets, guards, knobs, rivets, washers, bolts, and cases to name the most common. Just like spacers and standoffs, they are available in many shapes, sizes, materials, and plating.
